<image:caption>Max and Elsie are entering a junior rodeo this weekend. Max is in the 7-9 age division and is entering: Breakaway roping, goat tying, steer breakaway and boys sled slide. Elsie is in the 10-13 age division and is entering: Breakaway roping, ribbon roping, goat tying, poles and barrels. They are entering the rodeo on both Saturday and Sunday. How much will their family’s entry fees be (don’t forget to add gate and office fees!) for the weekend?</image:caption>

JR has accomplished titles many cowboys only dream of, but now his biggest goal is to be able to walk again. In 2018 at a PRCA rodeo in Pasadena, Texas, JR’s bareback horse flipped over on him and broke his back leaving his legs paralyzed. <image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - Spring 2025 - Mark Out or Mark Out Rule</image:title>
<image:caption>In bareback and saddle bronc riding there is something called the “mark out” rule. To correctly “mark out” a horse, the cowboy must have both of his spurs above the point of the horse’s shoulder for the first buck or stride out of the chute. They can’t begin spurring the horse until the first move has been made. If their feet are not above the point of the horse’s shoulder on the first jump, the judge will throw a flag on the ground in the arena indicating the cowboy missed the mark out and his ride is disqualified. In this photo, you can see that JR’s spurs are above the point of the horse’s shoulder.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Max and Elsie’s family have a diesel truck with a 35-gallon fuel tank. With their living quarters horse trailer on, the truck averages 8 miles per gallon of fuel. If the tank is full when they leave, about how many miles can the family travel before they have to stop and fill up? If their rodeo is 300 miles from their house, will they be able to make it on one tank of fuel, or will they need to stop and fill up with diesel? If diesel costs $3.50/gallon, how much will it cost to fill up their truck? This illustration is from the “Short Go and the Junior Rodeo Trail” chapter book. <image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - January/Febraury 2025 - Massage Grooming</image:title>
<image:caption>As long as you don’t use too much pressure, there really isn’t a right or wrong way to massage your horse. Use a rubber curry comb and massage your horse in circular motions. Most horses love this and if you pay attention to their cues, they will tell you the spots they need massaged most. They might lean into the brush, lick their lips, sigh or even close their eyes to tell you how much they appreciate your work. Massage can help their muscles from getting stiff and helps build the bond between you and your horse when saddle time is few and far between. It also is a good opportunity for you to notice any soreness or injuries on your horse.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - January/Febraury 2025 - Hill Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Another good use for hills is to use them to build muscle and balance. Walking and trotting uphill helps build muscle in their back and hindquarters, which makes them stronger in their stops, turns and accelerations. Walking and trotting downhill (make sure you have semi-dry footing) helps horses with their balance. If it is too cold to saddle, just lead your horse up and down the hill! You will both get stronger. To start, walk your horse up and down a hill 5 to 6 times a day several days a week. As your horse gets stronger, you can start trotting them up and down. You can also get creative and back them up and down the hill or walk them sideways across the hill both directions. Just don’t overdo it. Hill work is harder than it looks and a little bit goes a long way.</image:caption>

In the winter blog, Dusky Lynn, and her mom, Dusky, share their advice with other youth barrel racers. Whether you are a barrel racer, pole bender, or swing a rope instead, you will learn a lot from Dusky Lynn — her work ethic, maturity level, grit and try are far bigger than her size.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - January/Febraury 2025 - Backing</image:title>
<image:caption>Backing your horse is something we often overlook or do incorrectly. When we back horses from the ground correctly, we can really tone and strengthen their muscles and reinforce their respect for us as their leader. Start by asking for a few backwards steps at a time. Try to get them to back without pulling on them with the lead rope. Rather, use your body position to drive them backwards. The horse’s head should be even with or below their withers and their back should be slightly rounded. Ideally, we want them to pick up and place their back feet, rather than slide or shuffle them, but that might not be possible for every horse. As your horse gets better at backing, try backing up or down a hill for an added challenge.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - January/Febraury 2025 - Hill Stretch</image:title>
<image:caption>Much like people, horses can get sore in their “lower back.” This area on a horse is the area of the back that is closest to the horse’s rump. We can stretch this area by teaching our horses to put their front feet at the top of a hill and their back feet at the bottom. At first, use a small hill and try to get them to stand in this position for 30 seconds. As the horse gets more used to the stretch, you can let them stay in that position for 1 or even 2 minutes. As your horse realizes how good the stretch feels, you might even notice them stretching themselves in the pasture, or putting their head down to make the stretch deeper!</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - January/Febraury 2025 - Slack</image:title>
<image:caption>In rodeo, slack can mean a couple different things. It can be a roping term used to describe the portion of the rope between your loop and coils. You must pull your slack to get your loop tight around the calf or steer’s neck, horns or feet. The second way the word slack is used is to describe entries. During a performance, there are usually only 10-15 contestants per event. However, there might be more contestants entered in the rodeo than the performance time allows for. Therefore, many rodeos will hold a slack during the day to accommodate all the contestants who want to enter. Their times will count towards the payout, even though they won’t be competing during the rodeo performance. Some contestants actually prefer to perform during the slack because it is more laidback and might be at a more convenient time for their schedule.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - January/Febraury 2025 - Ground Poles</image:title>
<image:caption>You might not be getting to do a lot of pole bending this winter, but you can still use your poles! Space your poles equally apart and then knock them over. Walk and/or trot your horse over all six poles 4 to 5 times, several days a week. Ground poles help build core strength in your horse and also work to build stability in important joints like the stifle and hock. If your arena is muddy, pick a flat, semi-dry surface somewhere in the grass.</image:caption>

<image:caption>During the NFR you will hear the announcers and commentators talking a lot about the “average.” In rodeo, the word average means the total of their times or scores throughout the rodeo. So, at the NFR, the average champion in the timed events would be the cowboy or cowgirl with the fastest (lowest) time throughout the 10 rounds when all of their times are added together. For the roughstock events, the cowboy with the highest score when all of their scores are added together will be awarded the average champion.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This month’s blog features world champion tie-down roper and mental skills coach Tyson Durfey. Tyson shares with us some of the ups-and-downs he experienced throughout his career in the Thomas and Mack. He talks about what helped him compete well and what held him back. He also shared some behind-the-scenes photos and stories from the NFR. As we get ready to watch the best 10 days of rodeo, we hope you enjoy and learn from the insights Tyson was kind enough to share with us!</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - November/December - And the average champion is….</image:title>
<image:caption>Here is an example of how the average champion is determined at the NFR in a timed event like barrel racing and a roughstock event like bull riding. Solve the problems to see who won the average! In the roughstock events, “NS” stands for no score, or zero points. Who won the average in the barrel racing? Who won the average in the bull riding?</image:caption>

Max caught five times from the five-point line. Rhett caught four times from the three-point line. Ramsey caught four times from the seven-point line. And, Claynee caught five times from the three-point line. Who won the dummy roping? (Don’t forget to add 10-points to the score if the roper caught with all five loops!)</image:caption>

<image:caption>This month’s blog features professional horseman and roper Phil Haugen. Phil competed in the PRCA in calf roping, team roping and saddle bronc riding and won the Linderman Award in 1989 (see the April blog for details on the Linderman Award!). He also was inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2021. Phil took his rodeo experience and developed his own style of horsemanship that he has applied to more than 1,000 horses he has personally trained. Phil puts on horsemanship clinics all over the U.S. each year and keeps a barn full of horses in training. No matter which rodeo event you compete in, you will learn valuable horsemanship and life skills from Phil that will make you and your horse a better team.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - June 2024 - Team Roping Penalties</image:title>
<image:caption>Team ropers can get penalties by either breaking the barrier, or dropping a leg. At most rodeos, if a header breaks the barrier, 10 seconds is added to the run. If a heeler misses a leg, 5 seconds is added to the run. At their junior high rodeo finals, Elsie and Max roped three steers. On their first steer, they had a clean run with no penalties of 9.2 seconds. On their second run, they were 10.1 seconds, but Max slipped a leg. On their short-go steer, they were 8.3 seconds, but Elsie broke the barrier. In order to make nationals, their total time had to be less than 44 seconds on three-head. Did Elsie and Max make nationals?</image:caption>

It is very important for our horse’s physical and mental health to give them a variety of exercise. <image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - April 2024 - Pigtail</image:title>
<image:caption>In rodeo, the term “pigtail” has nothing to do with a hairstyle or a cute pink farm animal. The part of the barrier that determines if a cowboy or cowgirl “broke out” or not, is called a pigtail. The pigtail is tied to the barrier rope with a piece of cotton string. If the cowboy or cowgirl crosses the barrier line before the neck rope breaks off the calf or steer, the pigtail will break off the barrier rope and the contestant will get a 10-second penalty. If the contestant gives the steer or calf a head start and does not break the barrier, the pigtail will remain attached to the barrier rope. During the roping and steer wrestling events, you might see contestants looking back toward the boxes after their run. They are looking to see if the pigtail is laying in the dirt, or if it is still attached to the barrier rope. Although a pigtail is a small piece of equipment that is only a few inches long, it often is the difference between first and out-of-the-money for ropers and steer wrestlers. This illustration is from the NEW chapter book, “Short Go and the Junior Rodeo Trail,” which was made possible by Smarty Rodeo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - March 2024 - Spring Vaccinations</image:title>
<image:caption>Spring has sprung! I don’t know about you, but I am LOVING this warm weather! One of the springtime appointments I recommend to all my clients is to get their horses vaccinated. Just like people, we have vaccinations, or shots, for horses that help protect them from diseases. Several of the vaccines we recommend for all horses are caused by mosquitoes, so we like to vaccinate horses in the early spring before the mosquitoes start hatching. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) helps equine veterinarians stay up-to-date on the latest health research and recommendations for horses. One way the AAEP helps equine veterinarians is by determining a set of vaccination guidelines they can recommend to their clients. The AAEP recommends all horses receive “core” vaccines.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - March 2024 - Hazer</image:title>
<image:caption>A hazer is the cowboy or cowgirl who keeps the steer from running away from the bulldogger during a steer wrestling run. The hazer comes out of the tie-down and heeling box and runs along side the steer to ensure they do not move away from the steer wrestler while they get off their horse. The hazer’s job is very important to the success of the bulldogger. It is common for the hazing and bulldogging horse to be used as a pair. Although you won’t see a hazer’s name listed in the standings, steer wrestlers pay their hazers to help them. This photo is courtesy of Steer Wrestling 101.</image:caption>

Tom has been coaching bulldoggers for more than 40 years and has helped bulldoggers like Dakota Eldridge, Tyler Pearson, Jacob Talley, Rowdy Parrott, Tristan Martin and Tyler Waguespack achieve success. Tom gave us some great advice on steer wrestling fundamentals and technique, but maybe even more importantly, he shared some of his advice on what it takes to become a world champion. Even if you aren’t a bulldogger, be sure to read the last half of Tom’s Q&A section to get his thoughts on the power of positive thinking and how to set yourself up for success.</image:caption>

If you don’t pull your hands out evenly, meaning one hand is pulling harder on the string than the other, you can actually loosen the tie on the goat’s legs. <image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - February 2024 - Withers</image:title>
<image:caption>The withers of a horse look like a little hill at the place where the mane ends and the horse’s back begins. A horse’s withers are actually the part of their spine that goes between their shoulder blades. The withers help support and provide stability for the horse when they move. They also serve as an anchor point for many of the horse’s ligaments and muscles. Usually, as a horse ages, it will be easier to see their withers because many older horses lose muscle along their topline (or backbone). On foals and overweight horses, you might only be able to find their withers by feeling for them. Horses with low withers that are hard to see, are sometimes called “mutton-withered.” This illustration is from our Ranchin’ and Rodeoin’ coloring book.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A bell-collar catch means the loop goes over the calf’s entire head and is only around their neck when the rope breaks loose from the saddle horn. In most breakaway ropings, you must have a bell-collar catch to get a qualified time. <image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - December 2023 - Barrier</image:title>
<image:caption>The barrier is a rope system that crosses in front of the horse and attaches to the calf or steer’s neck. The calf or steer must break free from their portion of the barrier before the horse can come through their barrier. If the horse and contestant go through their barrier first, a penalty is applied. A barrier is designed to give the calf or steer the advantage over the cowboy or cowgirl. Barriers are used for timed events like breakaway roping, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, steer roping and team roping. This illustration is from our new chapter book, “Short Go and the Junior Rodeo Trail.” In this book for elementary-aged readers, Max and Short Go compete in the breakaway roping at a junior rodeo. Coleman is riding his great horse, Heisman. Look at the clock on the scoreboard! We caught up with Coleman while he was driving through the mountains on his way to a rodeo and he gave us some great advice for youth headers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - November 2023 - Chapter 4: The Best Feeling in the World</image:title>
<image:caption>“Crack!” Max could barely believe it. His loop caught the Smarty – a clean, bell-collar catch. Short Go stopped and Max pitched his slack without even thinking. He had caught! Mom was cheering from the back of the four-wheeler. Elsie put her own rope over her saddle horn so she could clap wildly. Max’s cheeks felt like they weren’t big enough to make room for the smile that spread across his face. “I knew you could do it!” Elsie said as she rode Jackpot over to give her little brother a high-five. Mom hopped off the four-wheeler and hugged Max tightly. Then she hugged Short Go and thanked him for being such a patient teacher. “I think this calls for a celebration,” Mom said. “Who thinks we should head back to the barn and get some popsicles in honor of Max’s first catch?” After the horses were taken care of and put away, Max sat on the porch crunching his cherry-flavored popsicle. He couldn’t help but be excited to see how tomorrow’s practice session would go. It would be better tomorrow. If he caught once, he could do it again. He knew it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is the final knot in a boy’s goat tying or tie-down roping tie. Typically, three of the four legs on the goat or calf are wrapped twice and then secured with a type of knot called a hooey. This illustration is from our new chapter book, “Short Go and the Junior Rodeo Trail.” In this book for elementary-aged readers, Max, Elsie and Short Go hit the junior rodeo trail with some big goals. Max competes in boys’ goat tying, which requires him to tie the goat’s legs using two wraps and a hooey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cowkids Only Blog - Cowkids Only - November 2023 - Senior Horse Care is Worth It!</image:title>
<image:caption>With a little extra care, we can keep senior horses performing well into their 20s. Senior feed, regular veterinary care and a slower warm-up are just a few ways to keep your senior horse feeling their best. This pony’s name is Shorty and he is at least 25 years old. He eats senior feed and takes medicine daily for a disease called PPID, or Equine Cushing’s Disease, that is very common in older ponies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To stay on a bareback horse, cowboys use a “riggin.” A riggin looks similar to a suitcase handle and is made up of leather and rawhide. The riggin is placed on the bucking horse’s withers and held on with a cinch. Each cowboy has their own personal riggin that is sized for their hand. The bareback rider puts his hand in a special glove and then wedges his hand in the strap of the riggin for the 8-second ride.</image:caption>
